What do I need to know before waxing?
FAQ About Waxing
- How long does the hair need to be before I wax?
The wax we use at Body Spa is very gentle and can remove hair as short as 1mm. Most other waxes on the market today require the hair to be at least 6mm or 1/4 inch. So at 1mm this is very convenient for our clients. If you are waxing the legs the hair should be a bit longer. 2mm or more is ideal. If the hair is too long, the esthetician performing the service may need to trim the hair which could result in an additional charge.
- What do I need to do before my appointment?
Do use a body scrub. While the skin on the face is generally exfoliated enough in terms of waxing, the body needs a little extra help. A somewhat gritty body scrub will help rid dead cells around skin pores and hair follicle, providing an easier exit. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, ultimately allowing the hair to be removed more easily. You may want to bring undergarments that you will be most comfortable in. Otherwise we will provide you with disposable underwear for your comfort.
- What about after care?
Ask for some bump lotion in the salon to take home with you to keep ingrown hairs down to a minimum. Compared to other popular hair removal methods like shaving and depilitory creams, waxing is quite kind to the skin and suitable for most sensitive areas of the body. Nevertheless, the waxing hair removal method significantly reduces hair growth, so waxing sessions are much less frequent than other hair removal practices.
- I want a brazilian… will I really need to get on all fours?
Fortunately, the answer is no. There are other methods of removing the hair in those areas. Of course, if you choose not to do this that won’t be a problem, you just may have some hair that will remain.
- I’ve never done this before… how bad does it hurt?
Let’s not kid ourselves. The first time you wax it might be a little uncomfortable. But the benefits far out weigh the cons. Do you remember how it felt the first time you tweezed your eyebrows? It hurt! But after a couple of times it wasn’t so bad anymore. Well it’s the same with waxing. After the first couple of times it just gets easier and easier. We have never had a client come in and say, “Gosh that was worse then I thought!” Our wax is so soothing and gentle you will NEVER want to pick up that razor again!
Purchase our “No Scream Cream” to take the edge off! It really helps!
- What is a brazilian wax?
A Brazilian wax is where all the hair, or almost all the hair in the bikini area is waxed. That includes front, inside and out. Buttocks are extra.
- Does medication effect waxing?
YES! You cannot be waxed if you are taking Accutane, Retin-A or antibiotics.
- Does waxing make the hair darker or more coarse?
No. The hair will grow back the same as before but there will be less of it.
- How long will my skin be smooth after I wax?
Everyone is different, but you can expect to be smooth for at least 3 weeks before seeing any re-growth. Appointments are typically every 4 weeks.
- Does tanning effect waxing?
Yes! Please wait a couple of days in between your tanning and waxing appointments. Your skin is very sensitive after sun exposure and we
cannot wax anyone that has been exposed to a lot of sun. Waxing directly after tanning could lift the skin. Ouch!!!PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO INFORM YOUR ESTHETICIAN ABOUT YOUR SUN EXPOSURE!
More Helpful Tips!
Purchase our “Plum Numb” before your appointment & “Plum Smooth” or “Whish Flawless” for after your appointment!!
- Taking an anti-inflammatory (such as ibuprofen) 30-40 minutes before your visit can increase your pain tolerance.
- Do not use any lotions in bikini area.
- Try to avoid caffeine the day of the appointment, as well as avoiding waxing 2 days before or after your period. A woman’s pain tolerance is considerably lower during these times.
- Don’t wear tight clothing for the next couple days after waxing.
- Keep hands away from touching freshly waxed skin, as this can encourage irritation or small pimples.
- When getting a bikini/brazilian of course cleanliness is helpful to you and the service provider as well.
